Runway Rubber Removal

Our specially-developed high-pressure water blasting vehicle is equipped with a 450 kW pump which has a delivery of 90 l/min at a variable pressure of between 1,000 and 2,800 bar. Depending on the thickness of the rubber deposit, water consumption ranges from approximately two to four liters per square meter. The rubber is removed by a cleaning unit mounted at the front of the vehicle. The hydraulically-powered nozzle bar cleans over a working width of about 1.75m. The working width can be increased up to 9m at the customer‘s request, in which case correspondingly more vehicles are used.
This has the advantage of an outstandingly high performance in terms of square meters per hour (up to 12,500 m²), which results in extremely fast job times.
The waste water suction is entirely captive within the cleaning unit. This means that no waste water contaminated with rubber is left behind, and we can clear the runway within a few minutes without leaving any residue. The speed of the cleaning machine, the water pressure and the speed of rotation of the fan-jet nozzle bar can all be varied to match the different removal rates from concrete, asphalt and ANTISKID surfaces.

Technical Description

Removal of rubber that has adhered to the runway surface at the touchdown zone which, particularly in wet conditions, can greatly reduce braking efficiency.

In addition, different fan-jet nozzles can be used depending on the thickness of the rubber deposit. Fan-jet nozzles have the advantage that the water jet leaves the nozzle at an angle of between 10° and 45°. Unlike round jets, the force applied is distributed over a larger area, allowing us to achieve virtually 100% cleaning results without unnecessarily damaging the runway surface.

The runway lighting (depending on its design) can be cleaned as well in a single work operation if the customer so requests. Our pricing not only includes waste water treatment but also any second cleaning operation which might be necessary. Depending on the thickness of the deposit, the net cleaning performance is at least 1,000 to 2,500 m² per hour per vehicle on asphalt and concrete surfaces, and 500 to 1,200 m² on anti-skid surfaces. Only water is used, without chemical additives of any kind. We use special, hydrostatically-driven combined tank and suction vehicles to ensure continuous operation on the runway.

The company Possehl, which manufactures ANTISKID coatings, exclusively recommends BGS Strate Wasserhochdruck GmbH in its documentation for removing rubber deposits from their special coatings.
